How happy are you with the state of your medical insurance? It strikes me as remarkable that this isn't a larger issue.

One feature of the consumer electronics market is that everything you buy is quickly out of date. Many of the products produced today are overkill so it makes sense to shop for last generation or even refurbished products.

We've had great luck going the refurbished route - sometimes this is the only way you can buy tested products. Many of the items come with reasonable warranties. A few places to shop are Return Buy and RefurbDepot.

Be sure and check for restocking charges and details of the warranties, but real values for home stereos and digital cameras can be had.

Who would have thought it ... solar power sites in San Francisco.

A few years ago I did some back of the envelope calculations that indicated the best area in the US for photovoltaics is probably the Northeast Corridor. The reason why it might work is the non-linearity in electricity prices as demand goes through the roof on hot days - precisely the sort of days where there is a huge amount of direct sunlight. It looked as if photovoltaics were at least competitive with gas turbines and, in many cases, they might win.
