One of Ed Felton's students has posted an interesting analysis of the RIAA charges against one of the students recently accused of music piracy. (as noted in slashdot)

My view is that the RIAA and music industry are frantic to deal with a problem that is probably mostly orthogonal to piracy. Frantic institutions sometimes take extreme measures. Hopefully people who own and control the majors will re-think issues of their business creatively - otherwise they will only continue their fall.

One result of the suits is a rise in the energy level among university students. It isn't big, but we are starting to hear kids talk about actions like boycotts. A serious boycott of Sony by students would probably be effective as Sony's music division is a small part of the company. This has the potential to turn into something nasty.

Speaking of Ed Felton, a note on the state of the MPAA's drive for new restrictive legislation in Massachusetts was recently published by Network World.

Interesting stuff. The best part is:

"The MPAA is the organization that is pushing the laws in all these states. They're spearheading this, and it's primarily for their benefit and to address their privacy and copyright agenda," Deutsch said.

That sentiment, along with those expressed at the Wednesday hearing, does not bode well for the future of the MPAA legislation in Massachusetts, according to one software industry expert in attendance.

"When you've got Verizon, the American Electronics Association, Harvard Law School and the ponytail gang all against you, then you've got a problem," he said.

We had a surprise Spring snowstorm yesterday, so it only seems reasonable to think about warmer weather and - ice cream.

Looking through my old notes here are some attempts at reproducing Ben and Jerry's flavors. Note that fresh ingredients are a must and you need to use high grade chocolate (Lindt or Schaffenberg for example) and real vanilla (none of that awful extract found in supermarkets).

Cherry Garcia clone

1/2 c semisweet chocolate shaved
1/2 c Bing cherries haved (fresh are best)
4 large eggs
1-1/2 c white sugar
4 c heavy cream
2 c whole milk
1 tsp quality vanilla extract

Place shaved chocolate flakes and cherries in separate bowls. Cover and refrigerate.

Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl (copper preferred) until light and fluffy.

Whisk in the sugar a little at a time until completely blended. Pour in the cream, milk and vanilla, whisking to blend.

Churn freeze.

After the ice cream stiffens (about 2 minutes before it is done), add the chocolate and cherries, then continue freezing.

yumm!

You always need a good vanilla. Here is one I like

French Vanilla Ice Cream

4 large eggs
1-1/2 c white sugar
4 c whipping cream
2 c whole milk
4 tsp quality vanilla extract

Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl (copper preferred) until light and fluffy

Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time until completely blended.

Add cream, milk, and vanilla and whisk to blend.

Churn freeze

In the next few weeks fine blackberries (imported) will begin to show up in the local stores.

Blackberry Ice Cream

3 pt fresh blackberries
3 c white sugar
1 fresh lemon
4 large eggs
4 c heavy cream
2 c whole milk

Toss the raspberries, 1-1/2 cup sugar, and the lemon juice together in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.

Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl (copper preferred) until light and fluffy

Whisk in the remaining sugar, a little at a time until completely blended

Pour in the heavy cream and milk and whisk to blend.

Drain the juice from the raspberries into the cream mixture and blend.

Mash 2 cups raspberries until pureed and stir into the cream mixture.

churn freeze adding the remaining cup of raspberries about two minuts before the ice cream sets.
