SJ Mercury: SBC's patent claim on Web navigation is way off course. Dan Gillmor. I'm not quite ready to echo Web commentary that calls SBC's offer a BT-like shakedown. But the company's claim has a certain odor, at best. In fact, U.S. Patent Nos. 5,933,841 and 6,442,574 may well turn out to be just one more example of a patent system that has run off the rails. SBC is trying to tell me I can't use static menus that don't change as the rest of my content changes?  They have patents on THAT

Sneaky Toolbar Hijacks Browsers. Internet users are mystified by a tricky browser add-on that installs itself without permission and defies attempts to remove it. Some are calling the program the most insidious thing on the Web. By Michelle Delio. [Wired News]

I've seen this thing in action.  It's really a pain in the but.  I think what's most disturbing is that my freakin' browser will allow this to happen.  I've noticed that IE isn't the model of security.  I accidentally went to a site the other day via a Google search that changed my home page.  Also, every link I clicked on until I restarted my browser kicked off pop-up adds.  Even links I know don't do that!

IE - how would you like to be hijacked today?
