Progress Report

The UEN Technical Directors (Jim, Barry & Dan) set director level goals twice each year. June 30 marks the end of the latest 6 month period. It's time to evaluate the progress.

During the first six months of 2003 we set 37 goals. I've broken down the progress into five areas. These are:

1. Done
2. Significant Progress
3. In Process, needs follow-up
4. Started, significant follow-up needed
5. Not started

Done is self explanatory.

Significant Progress, goals are of two varieties. First, there are goals that are ongoing and will likely never be totally completed. Second, there are goals that have a definite completion date and are only days or perhaps up to two weeks away from completion. In either case, progress has been made and most expectations have been met.

In Process, needs follow-up indicates that there has been progress and that it is not satisfactory or needs measurably more work to consider it done.

Started, significant follow-up needed is a nice way to say that not enough attention was paid to this goal. It will take some focused work to get this goal on track.

Not started is self explanatory.

So, without further delay, here is the score:

1. Done - 16
2. Significant Progress - 14
3. In Process - 6
4. Started - 0
5. Not started - 1

That gives us a 43% completion rate. (I'm looking for 50% in this area, so it's a bit low). The significant progress rate is 38%. Combined these two equal 81%.

Several goals that should have been completed right now account for the fact that too many goals still appear in the significant progress category. Among these are:

  • Core Ring - We've been waiting on equipment from Cisco.

  • ATM Out - We waited for an equipment order. Other projects have taken priority. This should be done soon.

  • LAN Out - The Foundry switch was installed. The firewall is still not done. Troy is pushing this along with a big meeting today.

  • OC-3 Microwave (Moab to Blanding) - The CEU hub move delayed this project. Jeff and Dan have been working on getting it done.

  • Regional Priority List - I'm waiting for input from the regions. The budget for FY 2004 was finalized last Friday. This should move forward now.

  • FY 2004 Strategic & Tactical Plan plus Budget - One more meeting with Dan, Barry and me to finalize the budget. The plans are done.

So, with a few more days, or a few breaks, we could have been to that 50% level in the DONE category.

Still, I'm pretty happy with our progress. Up next - goals for the July to December time frame...........
