"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

The bad and good of running a network

"When it rains, it pours." And it poured today.

First up, about 10 of us participated in a conference call with Ray Walker from UVSC. He is experiencing a slowdown almost every evening at 9:00, weekends and at odd times through the day. At first we thought this was a DNS problem. Especially since we identified some problems with the DNS setup at UVSC several weeks ago. The problem keeps coming back. And it's one of those intermittent things. The kind that drive technical types crazy.

Then we developed a plan to deal with the Cisco vulnerability. It was a thing of beauty. Security, engineering and NOC staff all working together. The plan was complex, multi-faceted. We had to upgrade the IOS on routers at all Hubs. We also made an attempt to mitigate our exposure by applying ACLs. The whole plan came together nicely and by 5:30 most of the work was done.

Tomorrow we are going to address all district offices and make the IOS changes there. Next week we will take care of routers at the secondary schools. All routers should be updated to lessen the possibility of compromise. Routers behind firewalls should be okay, theoretically. Still, we are going to address all router (and switches) by the time everything is done.

If you have questions call our NOC (801.585.7440). They have the answers.

On top of this we are dealing with the latest Microsoft exploit. It's taken a bit of a back seat. Still, Pete is working on a script and Troy is staying on top of this situation.

It was a good day. Despite all the uncertainty and concern much was accomplished. The energy level was high and I think we all felt a sense of satisfaction. The only problem is that we are far from finished..........
