Respect and Fear

Point of clarification and a personal observation:

In my opinion FEAR has no place at work.

With that said, let's see if I can make my point.

It's been interesting to see the power of fear operating in the work place. Fear of change causes some to seek help through the press. Fear of takeover causes suspicious behavior. Sometimes, that suspicious behavior drives more fear. Sometimes we even quit our jobs, move on, just because of the fear that exists at work. The irony there is that it's almost impossible to escape from fear.

Add to the mix the paranoia exhibited by many of us technical types and the fear can get out of hand, causing us to lose control of our emotions.

Oh, and one more thing. Because of fear one could read this message and think that it is pointed directly at the reader. This is not aimed at anyone. These are general observations.

But my point is that we should all examine how we approach things. If fear is driving decisions then STOP and THINK.

Here is a quick, non-technical, example that motivates and enlightens me.

For my whole life I've been listening to dire predictions about the water situation in Utah. Through the early 1980s we lived with perpetual predictions of the impending catastrophic consequences of too much water.

Right now we live with a daily torrent of drought-speak. And, I bet that in the end there will still be enough water to wash our dishes, bath, drink, etc.

Have you ever witnessed a meteorologist who predicted that there would be "just enough water". No. Neither have I. It wouldn't sell advertising space or time.

We could all panic and completely change our lives. We could let the fear of drought rule our emotions.

Or we could, and should, conserve water and go on with our lives.

We could let fear drive our decisions at work. Lot's of things can and do threaten our jobs and or security. Working together, respecting each other, is the way to overcome these real worries. Letting fear get the better of us is a possibility. It would be too bad if we let that happen...........
