Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Security Working Group

One of the most common questions I get about security goes like this:

"How do I stop internal threats?"

It seems that most districts and Universities thought they had the bad guys blocked. That was until Blaster, Naachi and SoBigF hit within days of each other. And thousands of machines were infected from internal attacks.

When I get the question it perplexes me. I want to have a definitive answer. There isn't one. There are many ideas about what works. This piece isn't about giving an answer. It is about looking for answers.

On November 13, 2003 UEN will be hosting a Security Working Group. We will be meeting at 10:00 AM at Utah Valley State College. Anyone interested in security is invited, although our target audience is what I've termed the Security Point of Contact or SPOC. Through the Network Operating Agreement process I've identified Security POC's for each of the Universities and Colleges in the state. Troy and I are in process of doing the same for all of the Public School Districts, ITS and the libraries.

This is a working group meeting. UEN is just the host and we certainly have a great interest in protecting the WAN. There is not question that we can't do this all by ourselves.

So, if you are interested, close to Utah and responsible for network security, please join us. More details to follow.........
