UWIN
A confab with the UWIN committee was just one of several meetings I attended today. The long name for this group is the Utah Wireless Integrated Network. This is a collaboration of the Department of Safety, UDOT, State ITS, UEN, local, county and state law enforcement and homeland security. (I've likely missed at least one key player and may be overstating the Homeland Security angle.) We spent two hours today identifying issues and attempting to figure out how to bring all of us together.
Many of the attendees are active law enforcement officers. Men and women with guns. Right there in the open. I felt very safe.
There were some frustrated segments of conversation. Overall, we have an opportunity to do some good here. One of the problems seems to be that a policeman in Logan cannot drive to St. George and use her/his mobile radio. This diminishes the capabilities of law enforcement types to go outside any given jurisdiction and still be effectively communicating with the squad, or any squad.
Hey, I'm not a professional. I pick up my Technical Lawspeak from "Law and Order." So, check your LUDS and be sure to check out our progress on the UWIN site............
