In June I spoke with somebody at Apple regarding making our new CD nouveaumatic available on iTunes before we would release it in September. I thought getting the new album on iTunes would be pretty easy, especially since the iTunes store already sells many of my albums and more are to follow since I agreed to make the music from my Higher Octave CDs available as well. I was sent an application form for independent record labels, which I filled out and returned more than three months ago. I have emailed a couple of contacts at Apple several times and have yet to find out about the status of the application. Needless to say I am disappointed by the way iTunes is handling this matter and I have no idea when, if ever nouveaumatic will be available on iTunes.

For years, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been waging war against peer-to-peer file-sharing software and the technologists who create it. Now the RIAA has turned its crosshairs on you, threatening to sue you for sharing the music you love. But even shotgun-style lawsuits won't solve the RIAA's problem. As more and more Americans learn to love online music, the answer must lie in new business models that harness the power of P2P as a vehicle for paying artists. If artists get paid when we share files, then artists win, we win, and yes -- even the RIAA wins. [Boing Boing] [iceplant radio]

Miles Davis poster
A picture named MilesPoster.jpg
Somebody in Dallas is putting up posters of faces without any words printed. I saw several different versions and recognized this one as being of Miles Davis.

In contrast, rival Honda says low volumes are forcing it to practically hand-build its Insight hybrid model, much like its NSX and S-2000 sports cars. Japan's second-largest automaker admits that after four years of selling hybrids, it barely makes any profit on them.
An alternative is the Toyota Prius - but does it have to be that ugly?

Illusionist David Blaine's spokespeople say he is "not in the best of health" two days before the end of his stunt. According to Sky, more than 250,000 people have visited the stunt over the last 42 days.

Blaine has had to fend off crowd taunts and abuse during this time, as well as being pelted with eggs and sausages.

A daily newspaper tied a beef burger to a remote-controlled helicopter and flew it up to Blaine's box.

Businessman Stephen Charles Field, 38, from Godalming in Surrey, was fined £750 for causing criminal damage to the illusionist's water supply on 16 September.

If that much abuse and taunting happened in London I shudder to think what would have happened in other cities!

Rumors Pt. 2
1. Some interviews are interesting and very enjoyable conversations, but some interviews are soooo boring that one is almost forced to make stuff up in order not to fall asleep - e.g. instances where the interviewer hasn't bothered to listen to the music or really does not seem to care...so I have been guilty of creating a few rumors myself....

2. You are probably the wrong people to ask to contribute rumors...if you are reading this diary you probably know more about me than most people...but maybe you have heard some....

Rumors about OL
I have always enjoyed hearing the many rumors about me and have tried to not confirm or deny any of them, often saying yes or no at random. I have also been guilty of encouraging rumors and even (gasp!) seeding them.....Here then let us deposit any rumors you may have heard in the comment section for this entry. I will create a link to this entry on the right side of the blog for easy access... I will of course not confirm or deny any of them.....I will get you started with a few bits I have heard:

OL is from Argentinia. I know his father's family.

OL lives in a cabin without electricity in Pecos, New Mexico.

OL spent a decade in Peru before moving to Santa Fe.

OL is gay and is often seen at at art openings in Santa Fe.

OL grew up in Brazil, where he studied guitar playing.

OL is not gay, is married and has a family.

And to add to the overload of posts about Samsung today, MSMobiles has a roundup with details of the South Korean manufacturer's three new Palm-powered smartphones, the SGH-i500, the SPH-i500, and the one everyone has been talking about lately, the SGH-i505. The SGH-i500, which is said to be only for the European market, will be a tri-band GSM/GPRS phone and have a built-in one megapixel digital camera and 32MB of RAM. The SGH-i500 is already out here, and is like the poor American cousin of the SPH-i500: it has only 16MB of RAM, runs an older version of the Palm operating system, and lacks a digital camera. The SGH-i505, which just recently surfaced, has a rotating screen, 32MB of RAM, and a VGA quality digital camera. Read... [Gizmodo]

Doc Searles picture of Las Vegas (Mos Eisley)
Doc Searles took this picture of Las Vegas from an airplane, and notes the similarity to Mos Eisley. I've noticed that the inhabitants are similar, too : )

I don't know what Mos Eisley is - but that's a cool photo!

Thu 16 Oct: Annapolis MA - Ram's Head
Gingerly threading our large busses through the narrow streets of Annapolis, we headed for the Ram's Head for a noon load-in, only to find out that the contact person we had spoken to as recently as Wednesday had not been told that there was something happening in the club until 2pm and anyway we couldn't get bus parking until 2pm. So, the busses had to find their way through town, turn around and go away for a couple of hours.

Then we found out that the club would ask for a rather large percentage of our merchandise and CD sales, which of course meant that we wouldn't sell at all - apologies to the fans that wanted to buy CDs....Hm, and the food sucked as well...

We did play rather well, not due to the food or sound, but because the fans were great. Our own Midas Heritage console was deemed too large and Alan had to make do with a Crest mixing console, and in any case the in-house sound system is nothing to write home about. But between the fans and us, we made it all work and explored some great melodic landscapes. It is nice to be in a small room like this club once in a while.

To the people who came last night wanting to buy a mini-CD...we will have a few unsigned mini-CDs left after this tour and will make those available from our web site. Again, thanks for your understanding that we couldn't sell under those conditions.
