Siena in the Rain. We arrived after hanging with the Ciacci family.
[for the sake of clarity - The Digital Tavern] [Mediaburn]
I am a sucker for photos of Siena. Nice night shot! Always wanted to attend the famous Palio race. Here are some links for more info on the Palio: 1, 2, 3.

As you may have read, Courtney Love has just been booked on drug charges for alleged illegal possession of prescription drugs -- including Oxycontin. At which point you may have thought, hmmm, waitaminute, Oxycontin ... doesn't that ring a bell? Indeed it does. It's precisely the same drug that Rush Limbaugh recently admitted to buying by the boxload. [collision detection]
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I mean two people couldn't be different and yet they are doing the same drug....and both got caught....

Just when you thought mobile-phone behavior couldn't get worse, here comes a lovely bit of news from the BBC. Apparently, a couple of British police officers in Haddington, East Lothian recently noticed a car weaving erratically down a busy street. When they caught up to it, they realized why: The driver was attempting to use two cell phones simultaneously: As Sheriff Kenneth Pritchard told him: "Driving is sufficiently difficult with the amount of traffic on the roads without the added distraction of mobile phones and to use two mobile phones is the height of stupidity for someone in your position." Kids and Concerts
OL try to spend more time attracting the young generation to your concerts - maybe customize the concert for them. If you see young adults in your concerts, invite them up stage for 5 minutes or so. Have them dance, play instruments, whatever, give away posters etc...) All this will probably add 20-30 minutes to your concerts(not bad). After all - If you get the kids you also end up getting the whole family. The word of mouth travels farther with young fans - probably because they know more people than we adults know. - MichaelV • 10/30/03; 7:34:11 AM

Nice idea Michael, but.....
1. Inviting kids up on stage is not possible. Stages are usually at least 4 feet high and have no railing around them. One stage-diving child and it is all over.
2. There is also a problem with our instruments. The stage is usually cluttered, not just with instruments but also with Techno Beams, which are $3,000 each. Add to that all the microphones and cables that could make a child trip....you get the point. And what instruments would the kids play in the first place? The parents would buy them and bring them or should I have a big bag of them? I am not big on "audience participation". I walked out on a performance where the promoter had handed out castanets to every member of the audience.
3. Most promoters specialize. In other words promoters that promote concerts (theater or club) will not have any experience with kid shows.
4. Obviously most of the clubs serve alcohol and only do shows over 21.
5. Advertising. A show for kids would have to be advertised differently, I imagine.
6. Posters are expensive. I haven't broken even yet with nouveaumatic and am wondering what I might be doing after 2004 and you want me to give away posters? Please tell me you are joking.

All of that said, I did allow a couple kids to come to sound checks during this last tour. One was the grandchild of our truck driver and the other the son of a friend. I showed them the instruments and explained what we were doing and after sound check I answered any questions they had. I enjoyed the experience and hope that maybe next year we could coordinate something with local schools. We could send teachers some materials in advance, such as a CD and photos of the instruments with a basic explanation of the function etc. That way the class could be somewhat prepared for the experience. What do you think of that idea?

"They're good wines, but I won't remember them tomorrow," Ms. Hesser said. Mr. Shipley found them overly uniform, despite the diverse combinations of grapes. "They're charming, but not compelling," he said, though the makers would doubtless prefer it the other way around.
Bull! Fools, I say! Maybe this will mean that the Super Tuscans will get cheaper? Maybe that's the devilish idea? I'll order me a few cases....

On second thought, I have always thought that the $80 bottle of Luce della Vite, from the partnership of Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de' Frescobaldi, was not very good....
