Last night was my monthly visit to a local children's home and it was (as always) a nice and refreshing time for me. I had a couple of good one-on-one conversations.
The first was with a little girl that just started 6th grade. For her school, that's when you go to "middle school" and get lockers and so forth. She's had a tough time finding her way around to classes and the bus. As we were having our story-time she was practicing open and closing her lock. I didn't get a locker until 7th grade, but I did love and hate 6th grade...it was a very hard growing up year. I met my best friend (still my best friend) but my mom also had an alcoholic move in with us. You grow up. Likewise, I knew this little girl had been removed from her home for some reason and still maintained a quite cheery & polite attitude.
The second was sitting with a first grader during coloring time. I love six-year olds. They are smart and know a ton of stuff, but still want to hold your hand and give you sneaky smiles. He likes his new teacher. His favorite thing to do at recess is play on the good monkey-bars. He gets cold easy and was found wearing a hooded-pullover that he could over all but his li'l face and hands with when he scrunched up in an almost-ball position...and could still color his magic-bunny that way.
I really should work with kids....if for nothing else than my own sanity. They're amazing.
