TOKYO (Kyodo)--The controversial North Korean ferry Mangyongbong-92 will dock at Niigata port next Monday, according to a notice a pro-Pyongyang Korean residents' group in Japan received from the North on Tuesday.
The General Association of Korean Residents in Japan has been urging North Korea since June to resume the ferry service. It runs on an irregular basis between Wonsan and Niigata, carrying cargo and passengers, mostly residents of Japan of North Korean descent.
The Japanese government alleges the ship was used by North Korea for illegal activities such as unauthorized transmission of cash, smuggling of banned equipment and espionage.
The ship last visited Niigata in January. It canceled scheduled trips to Japan following massive security increases by Japanese authorities and public protests at the port.
