Shinzo Abe can rest easy -- Washington is certainly not about to sign a non-aggression pact with Pyongyang.

It appears that Kim Jong Il thinks he lives in a Wild West movie.

There is no one in the broadcasting industry here in Japan that will be sorry to see Rupert Murdoch exit Japan. The reason he is selling his stake in SkyPerfecTV is because he finally learned he is never going to be able to achieve a dominant equity stake in anything significant here. His first impression on the Japanese was a very bad one when he applied his typical bully tactics and tried a hostile takeover of  TV Asahi. There are some legal restrictions still regarding foreigners taking more than a 20% equity stake in broadcasters, but there are ways around that. In fact, a number of smaller broadcasting entities in Japan are quietly "for sale" and would love a naive foreign operator to come in and take them over. One is a popular FM radio station in the Tokyo area, the other is a TV station in a historic city. But these are too small fish for the likes of Mr. Murdoch.

SARS and terrorism, have hit Japanese airlines, just as elsewhere. However not sure if government bailouts are really the answer to save second-tier airlines. It's not like JAL is going under. Well, not this week, anyway.
