Delphi CEO Miller still getting message out. Lead article in the Dayton Daily News has more on the message coming from Delphi. Dayton, known for years as a GM town, is of course deeply concerned about the potential loss of over 5,000 jobs. Miller's message centers on the wages and benefits of hourly workers. GM retirees are given a generous retirement package. Delphi inherited the GM package when it was spun off from the mother ship. It needs to shed the cost. But, does it need to screw the workers and the communities? It's part of a whole series of missteps dating back many years in the US automotive industry.
So, what's the solution? Not many pretty ones available. But a knee-jerk send-the-work-overseas solution isn't the only one available--or maybe even the best one. Wes Iversen explored this topic in the January 2005 issue of Automation World. Why don't we try using best manufacturing practices to make our plants competitive? More on that in the November issue.
