Efficient Airplane Loading

Interesting article in The New York Times (I hate to link to them partly due to registrtion, but mostly because they now charge for viewing columnists, but...). If you read this blog often you know I'm on an airplane a lot. Just flew Air Tran to Orlando a couple of weeks ago. They had an interesting approach that, at first, through me off, but on reflection seemed like a genius of common sense over operations research mathematics. They load a portion of the back then a portion of the front. Then alternate. What that does is actually load twice as many people at once since the two groups are not in each other's way. It actually worked very well. On the other hand, now I know why I don't fly United.

How to End Airplane Boarding Bottlenecks. Why is shaving a few minutes off the boarding human cattle herd such a big deal? Ask any airline at the top or bottom of an on-time performance ranking. By CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT. [NYT > Business]
