When and Where Does This Real World Begin?

Free Information [posted by Troy]
I've been doing some reading for my grad. classes about the nature of information in our society. Many people think we are moving into (or are already in) an information or knowledge economy where the creation of new concepts (captured in information) has value or is capital. I find this very interesting. While this shift has been going on, most people think that all information will be free in the future thanks to the Web. Unfortunately, the opposite may actually be true. Information could be more restricted since it holds the true value in the emerging economy. Many academic publishers are making a move to work with university libraries to make information free (see library as pubilsher). It is cheaper for universities to publish infomormation than to pay high-priced journals (see also information free for all). There is a concern for the future of the public library, since most public libraries are neglected, but the need will remain for the public to purchase information to share as a community. It is very cool to watch a public (American) institution (the library profession) shift with emerging technologies.
