You need your brain... [posted by Troy]
Look, St. Patrick's day is just a few days away, and already, some of us have started enjoying the local, Irish-American pubs. I just wanted to give all of you a reality check to remind you that you need your brain. As it turns out, the old saying that humans only use 10% of their brains is a myth. That means that every brain cell in your head could vital. Each loss may directly impact your IQ. One plus to report is that brain power is not needed some for jobs like President of the United States.

Fun with yarn
This is kind of thing that just impresses the hell out of me. "Mathematicians Get Crafty with Geometry" is a report from NPR a few days ago about these people who created hyperbolic planes through crochet.

Newspapers [posted by Troy]
Here's a thought provoking post from LIS news about online newspapers. It links to a good NY Times article about the problems faced by the papers. More people are reading news online, but they don't want to pay online. Will online advertising creat enough $$$ to run a newspaper? It's not looking good. In the future, will people want paper newspapers? In our 24/7 breaking-news world, isn't print out of date by the time the news is printed? Would you pay the NY Times for online articles?

Ah...the academic life
Today marks the first day of my springbreak. I have to rub in the fact that I am home this week to all of you in the corporate world who already (or soon will) make double my income.
