NY Times article [posted by Troy]
It scares me a little bit to think that the US government is creating news segments to run on local TV. It really moves in a direction where we can't trust the local news to be unbiased.

Baseball Circus [posted by Troy]
As Congress gets ready to have a steroid circus over baseball, Slate published an article about testifying before congressional committees. It turns out that the Constitution does not give Congress the power to subpoena, but Congress started issueing them almost right away and the Supreme Court upheld this power in 1821. Basically, if people could ignore Congress, then they would have no power. But, if a subpoena is ingored, the entire House (or Senate as the case may be), would have to vote to issue a citation against an individual. If this passed, then the Executive branch (US attorney) enforces the citation. Thus, there are some interesting checks and balances that prevent Congress from turning into a court system on its own or from enforcing its own laws. That is pretty cool.
