Virtual Worlds [posted by Troy]
As I've been doing some reading, I came across this article that claims that Everquest is the 77th largest economy. I hadn't heard of Everquest until I found the article, but evidently, it is a virtual world that doesn't exist outside of cyberspace. People generate identities, create goods, and own wealth in this D&D-type world. Then, when people get sick of it, they are selling this wealth on Ebay. An economist figured out that this world has the potential to generate more wealth than many countries. This speaks so much about the power of the Web, when many of these "players" consider themselves citizens of the Everquest world first.
