Nike...responsible? [posted by Troy]
I heard this NPR story today about this tshirt company that is moving or has already moved to China. You're probably thinking that this is nothing new, but the thing that caught my ear was the discussion about Nike opening plants in China, but setting out rules about how workers were to be treated. They are doing things like outlawing child labor and giving workers one day off a week. Workers are still making our clothing in conditions under which most of us wouldn't work. However, coporations have started to impose rules thanks to pressure about sweat shops in the 1990s. This is a good sign. Just remember, when you lose your job you can feel better that you are not losing it to slave labor. People are getting paid a little better than they used to. In any event, consumer pressure does help push the market in positive directions sometimes. Now, if we can only get Walmart to start paying people in the United States better...

Politics [posted by Zelderbar]
I've gettinga bit annoyed lately. We have some serious problems that we should talk about in our country such as energy policy, Iraq, the tanking economy, loss of jobs, and environmental policy to just name a few things. There are many sides to these issues that both political parties should be discussing with the American people. Instead, here are issues in which Congress has been involved that have been dominating the news:
  • Tom Delay's ethics scandle.
  • Fighting about the filibuster of judges (when over 90% of nominees have been approved)
  • Terri Schiavo's death
  • Steroids in baseball
Now, don't get me wrong. These are important news that merit some media attention, but please, these should not be all we hear for months.
