Things are a little quiet at the office today.  In a mock celebration of Mr. Jackson's acquittal on all charges, I decided to jam out to some old school Michael Jackson, circa Off the Wall.  Make fun of me all you want.  :-P

I am very much looking forward to the midweek consumption of tasty beverages.  It should be a good time, considering who has committed to being there publicly.  You know who you are.  I will be the one sucking down a nice margarita, on the rocks with salt!

P.S. Before I am flamed by the masses, please note that I am not really celebrating Michael Jackson's acquittal.  I think we can all agree that what he did--while not found to be legally wrong--was certainly strange and unusual.

As Kip Dynamite sang, "I love technology."  That said, just some short notes.

  • Yesterday was the second Tuesday of the month, and it is time for another round of "Patch the Latest Windows Vulnerabilities."  For those of you who do not use *nix or Fruity Computers, go visit Windows Update to play the home version of this game.  You will need to use Internet Explorer to get these updates.
The URL in the above link has changed recently, as the Softies have released a new version of the Windows Update software.  The advantage of the new Windows Update--if you use other Microsoft software--is that it finally puts all the updates in one place.  You will no longer need to search for that security patch for any of the Microsoft Office products.  Besides, I don't feel like having to fix your broken compy.  (Of course, I will probably do it if you ask nicely.)
  • Speaking of unhacking machines, we apparently missed a couple of machines in our sweep last week.  They hid the FTP servers as "Microsoft Update" and "Microsoft Java" services on the machines in question.  It was somewhat helpful that the machines in question were running Windows NT, as that meant they could not run the other items we observed on the other hacked servers.  Since the hardware was also dated, they were not serving up any content as they had little free space to do so. As someone said to me a couple of weeks ago, did the University hang a virtual sign that said "Please hack my shit?"
  • That also leads me to the interesting meeting we had today.  To summarize, "The firewall is coming."  That should make my life much easier.  One of the things that has helped during this whole thing is the creation and maintenance of a Wiki for my group.  If you work in a group that needs to share information, a wiki is pretty damn cool.
  • My work laptop--a Dell Latitude D600--has lost one of its rubber feet.  Apparently, this is a common problem as it happened to a Novell Engineer with whom I have worked.  Fortunately, I use a dock at work, so this is not too terrible a problem.  I will still need to get it "fixed."  Might as well make use of that Gold Support.
