South of the river...

Mark Phillips - The Australian - A FLEET of London cabs painted with colourful images of the 12 Apostles rock formation will spruik the 2006 Commonwealth Games to Australia's oldest sporting rivals.

Twenty-five of the cabs are now roaming the streets of London with the slogan "Let the gold rush begin" and the Melbourne 2006 logo painted on their sides.

Victorian Treasurer John Brumby launched the fleet today, 477 days before the Games begin, during a visit to Europe to promote the state's economy.

Games organisers expect about 11,000 visitors to Melbourne 2006 will be British.
