One of my heroes, Peter Ford writes on schoolblogs.com: "
"If a student leaves my class with the idea that Internet Explorer is the only internet browser then I have done him or her a disservice. They should have experienced Opera, Mozilla or others in their time under my influence. Then I can honestly say that they are learning generic skills that will equip them to make increasingly important choices as they reach the 'real world' threshold."

Front page story in the NY Times: A large federal study of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women was abruptly halted, researchers say, because the drugs caused a slight but significant increase in the risk of invasive breast cancer.
The stock price of the company that makes the drug has dropped significantly.
I just looked in the medicine cabinet. My wife has been taking this for over 2 years. You can imagine I was startled when I saw the Wyeth name on a package of premarin plus. I'm not immediately freaked out because Patricia is in excellent health and recently had a mammogram done, but I can't help feeling very uneasy about this.
The company has a press release on their own site, but it doesn't actually tell you which pills were used in the study. Fuckers, trying to protect their brand at the possible expense of their customer's health. Unacceptable.
Here's the Women's Health Initiative press release about stopping the survey

Kuro5hin reports on the proposed RAVE Act. Its intent is: "To prohibit an individual from knowingly opening, maintaining, managing, controlling, renting, leasing, making available for use, or profiting from any place for the purpose of manufacturing, distributing, or using any controlled substance, and for other purposes." but they appear to have gone a bit overboard. This is well worth the read. [ via marc canter]
