Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, Pt. 2

Alrighty, I spent a little more time converting another macro that may be of interest to some webloggers. This Radio macro is based on one of the sample scripts that came with my copy of Frontier, which is Radio's older cousin. Dave Winer wrote this script back in 1997, which in turn was based on Dave Polaschek's original ISBN macro.

About this macro

Many folks often have a link to a wishlist of sorts on their weblogs. This macro can help you create such a list for the books you want, particularly if you want the gift-giver to find a great price for the book (Subtle, but it helps. They may even be able to get you a couple of books then, instead of paying too much for just one. There's a win-win for ya. :-) ).

This macro builds all the HTML needed to make a URL for checking the price of a particular book. You need to feed this macro the ISBN of the book, and optionally, the phrase you'd like to see as the linked text for the URL.

The older version of this macro used to just create a link to a particular book at Amazon. I've changed that behavior, though. Now this macro creates a link that points to Glenn Fleishman's book price comparison service, ISBN.nu which allows you to check the price of a book at a number of stores, including Amazon and Powell's. Glenn even makes it easy to see who has the best price when you factor in shipping charges.

Disclaimer: I don't work for Glenn, nor do I get a kickback from him (but I'm open to a discussion about the possibility of donations to a charity, Glenn. ;-) ). I'm just a happy customer of Glenn's service, since it's so well thought-out and executed (and it's saved me some serious $$) from a user-centered standpoint. It's also a chance to hack a simple script, and learn a little more UserTalk.

How to get the macro

MacOS users can option+click on the link below to get this macro for use on your own weblog. (Windows users do the Right-click and Save As... thing). Mac users may also need to set the type/creator codes to be 'FTsc'/'LAND'.

The macro to help you make a book wishlist for frugal folks (sounds so much nicer than cheapskates, eh?) on your Radio weblog is available for download from my Gems folder. The macro creates the links you see in the example below.

Download the macro script to your computer, then switch to Radio and open it from the file system using the File>Open... choice from the main menu bar in Radio.

Example

Here are a few things I'd like someone special to add to my library (hint, hint):

How to use this macro

You call this from your weblog page by using a variation of the following code snippets in your weblog (You can copy+paste these, then editing the stuff inside the quotes to reflect your own choices)
<%priceCheckISBN ("1556154844", "Code Complete")%>
<%priceCheckISBN ("0393962202", "The Prince -- Norton Critical edition")%>
<%priceCheckISBN ("034536239X", "Sun-Tzu: Art of Warfare")%>

This should work either as part of a home page template, or in a regular post.
