Well, I now have a nice bus-powered firewire/usb hard drive that I will be using as part of my new (and hopefully improved) data backup regimen. I think I have the partitioning game worked out, and now I'm waiting to hear back from the folks at Dantz pre-sales for their take on which product I'll need.
