NFL starts again :-)
I'll be watching the Steelers again this year. We've reached preseason game two and it isn't very fun to watch a web version of a football game without any sound at all. I'll be rooting for the Steelers anyways (now where did my terrible towel go...)

A couple of years ago it was easy to get a free radio stream of the football game. Now - no one seems to broadcast anything over the internet (unless your the NFL and then it isn't free anymore). Internet radio used to be the coolest thing... now no one even looks at it. Pretty sad state of affairs.

JRobb: Very cool: induction-based cooking surfaces
Luxine (sorry no website but great analysis by EPRI) has a high-end product.   Fast heat-up (2 min).  Cool surfaces (which is great for the cook!).  High efficiency (95% vs. 30% for a commercial gas range).  Superior performance.  I want one.  Resources:  a discussion of induction ranges at Bob Vila, ebay sales, and Induction systems has a  products and explanations. [John Robb's Weblog]

This is a very cool gadget. Add me to the list of folks who want one. I'd been wondering what kind of equipment to put in the kitchen eventually (it'll be a couple years yet). This seems like a great gadget.

Wired: Experts Warned of Weak Power Grid
Scientists and engineers have been predicting since well before Sept. 11 that an aging grid riddled with threadbare links and plagued by chronic shortages was headed for trouble. Little has been done, and sure enough, they were right.

I could remember hearing this kind of information a while ago. The big question is still going to be: When will something be done about it?

Years ago, while I was working at Data General, there was a big deal with changing the traffic pattern around Computer Drive. DG offered to pay for studies. And the short story was that not much of anything happened for a really long time. Someone eventually got killed in an accident there. Wouldn't you know it - Westboro finally woke up and did something about it a while after that.

Predicted failures and suggestions don't always get through because there are many things going on and the most pressing problem might not be what could happen sometime in the future. Now that we've seen what it's like to have a fragile infrastructure have a cascading failure, it would seem that the warnings about the possible failures might actually be listened to and followed up.

Like a lot of stuff, it'll be another wait and see situation.
