The Register: Gnome to be based on .Net. I have to quibble - GNOME will be based on the ECMA Standard. .Net is the brand name for one vendor's implementation of this standard. [Sam Ruby's Radio Weblog]
Actually Sam is incorrect, they're cloning the .Net class library which isn't part of the ECMA standard. So they are actually basing their work on .Net. A somewhat frightening thought! The CLI and C# aren't particularly interesting without the rest of the .Net framework. Miguel even said they're going to clone Windows Forms with GTK widgets. Frightening, but windows forms is a vastly superior way of developing then how Gnome development is done now.
The real question is whether or not this will create a rift in the Gnome community. Given Gnome is very much a Free Software project, rather then an Open Source project (different philosophy), statements like this have to make large portions of the developer community cringe. When that happens, you'll probably end up with a fork. A fork in Gnome would be disastrous for the momentum behind the project. I'm just thinking out loud though, I have no idea how the Gnome community is reacting to this. Maybe they love the idea.
