XML Database Products

Ronald Bourret has updated his list of XML database products. This is THE place to start if you're looking for an XML product to help with your data management needs.

As part of his announcement Ron also provided some interesting stats.

   Middleware: 46 products
   XML-enabled databases: 7 products
   Native XML databases: 28 products
   XML servers: 6 products
   XML application servers: 13 products
   Content management systems: 22 products
   Discontinued(?) products: 8 products

The large number of native XML databases is particularly interesting. I suspect we'll see a pretty significant shakeout in this area pretty quickly.

A Wheel Comes Off

Is Microsoft getting ahead of itself?. As the software giant prepares to launch the first trials of its .Net My Services, key details of the plan are still "not figured out." [CNET News.com]

What a surprise Microsoft can't figure out a business model for .Net My Services. This is a prime example of why nothing that they're doing right now is assured of success. They were extremely foolish to believe that people would want a centralized model for this kind of thing. I like the concept as far as the services go, but I've said it many times and I'm saying it again, I want to control my data.

If this has any chance of making it, it needs to be a highly decentralized system. Up to the point of even allowing you to store the data on the desktop. How a company as large as Microsoft can justify this as a market though is really questionable. People aren't going to pay large amounts of money for this, and definitely not a monthly fee to someone like Microsoft. Smaller players could maybe find a niche, if Microsoft would leave them room that is.

Overall this is just the first wheel to come off the web services hype machine. We'll see many more before too much longer.
