Xindice HTTP Interface
It's been a common request to be able to access documents in Xindice directly via HTTP. This is functionality we used to have and foolishly removed at one point to cut down surface area. Since it really isn't that hard to add it back in I dug up the old code cleaned it up and packaged it as a plugin. This allows you to retrieve any document in the repository using a web browser. We'll add this back into the core after Xindice 1.0, but for now you can still get the functionality. Check the Xindice HTTP Interface page for more info.

Linux CD Burning
Reflections of a CD Burn. Creating audio CDs from MP3 files on a Red Hat 7.2 system. [Linux Journal]
Ugh, this is the problem with Linux and what finally made me give up on it. Everything you want to do is like frigging pulling teeth. It took this guy two weeks to get CD burning to work. I believe it! I looked into this too and after my alloted 5 minutes was up I decided it just wasn't worth the trouble to even try to figure out how to do it.
When I got a burner for the Mac it took me a total of 5 minutes to unpack it, plug it in and start burning a music CD from iTunes. No fuss, no muss, no reboot, it simply worked. I'm a pretty hardcore geek too, but there are some things that I just don't care to devote more then 5 minutes to. CD burning is one of those things.

REST for Web Services
Second Generation Web Services. If SOAP and friends are the first generation of web services, what will the future look like? Paul Prescod explains how the basics of HTTP, XML and URIs will underlie second generation web services. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service]
This is a really interesting look at the idea of XML based resources and how SOAP and friends may not be the right approach for many problems. In particular it looks at UDDI and how the SOAP API is completely unnecessary. So not only is UDDI worthless, but the implementation is of course ten times more complex then it needs to be. Definitely some interesting ideas for the XML database world where there's a lot of pressure to use SOAP.

Powerbook wake up
Reader: Mac OS X v10.1.2 may cause PB problem [MacNN]
I've been seeing this too, it's very annoying since it always hits me when I disconnect from the external monitor. It definitely started with 10.1.2. Prior to that it was flawless.

XYZFind X-Slate
XYZFind is working on a new product X-Slate. This is based on the Transquery work that Evan Lenz started a while ago. I've got to give XYZFind a lot of credit for being one of the few XML database companies that is actually innovating. I haven't decided if I agree with what they're doing yet, but I'm sure glad to see they're doing it.
