A bit of Idealism for Michael Jardeen
I listened to Leonard Cohen last night and this is what he said:
"And I really don't know who sent me, To raise my voice and say: May the lights in the Land of Plenty Shine on the truth some day."
Yeah, I live in the Land of Plenty and the lights shine all night long. 24-7 they say...[Marek J]

...thank you Marek. On the 5th I asked my daughter if she knew who Chris Gueffroy was...she didn't of course...I explained..someday she will understand...mj

Diary of a Start-Up
the rise and fall of ArsDigita and lessons from the world of venture capital

This is a story about a company. A company that was profitable from Day 1. A company that built products that were useful to many other companies. A company that had ethics...

That is, until the venture capitalists arrived on the scene. Lying to customers and employees became commonplace. Greed replaced philanthropy... [Eve Andersson]

...Wow! I read this and I could feel so much of the pain that I have had to go through in the past five years of working in start-ups. It's tough to attach yourself to a dream only to watch it die through incompetence, greed, and just plain evil behavior. Lies come so easily to some people...I don't understand how some can lie so easily...My last employer ripped my heart out, it's going to be a long while before I trust anyone, and that is what angers me the most...mj

ps. what's the other side of the story??

Tracking spam to the source
Finding firms behind junk e-mail is harder than just deleting

"Lose 20 pounds in 8 days" ... "Your Million $$$$s Is Waiting" ... "Exciting Home Business Opportunity!!!!" Every day, we're deluged with junk e-mail, popularly called spam. Fad diets, home-refinancing offers, pornography -- you name it -- pile up in our in-boxes. We've never heard of most of the companies sending the e-mails, and many of the offers are for products and services we don't need. Almost all end up in the electronic trash can moments after we read the subject line.
[Privacy Digest][Wall Street Journal via MS-NBC]

Will this problem ever get solved? Real fines for the spammers and real fines for the ISP's who aid in the transmission of Spam would help. Problem is...too many companies oppose restrictions...too much money at stake...mj

Chu Mei A New One
This is a weird story that still has legs. The Chu Mei-Feng Internet Sex Scandals Still Dominates Online Searches. It's a story about a sex scandal that features a female politician filmed having sex with a married man. So the question remains...why all the interest? [Yahoo]...mj

George Price. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the fine line between sanity and madness gotten finer?" [Quotes of the Day]

The Trek
Everything is for a reason, everything,
Our pain is a lesson of harsh instruction,
showing us the path to pleasure,
the road back to paradise.

We are lost children who've strayed.
Our eternal parents search for us,
shouting over storms of chaos,
striving to bring the wayward home.

By the struggle we are formed or broken;
our passage is a continuing ritual;
each spirit must travel once, moving onward
Towards kingdoms to come.
-- Stephen Wayne Anderson, 26 January 2001

Stephen Wayne Anderson was executed on January 29th, 2002 in a state sanctioned murder by the state of California.

The death penalty is wrong. It is the one sentence that years later we can not fix if we find out we made a mistake. It lowers us to the level of the criminal. Anderson's case had many problems. The family of the victim were opposed to the execution. The trial attorney who represented him has had two other death penalty cases overturned due to incompetence.

When will we grow up and decide to be better than what we are. When does the killing stop. Not under this administration. George W. Bush has supported the execution of the mentally challenged and a man who's attorney slept through most of his trial...but that's Texas justice. I would prefer to see 95 killers spend the rest of their lives in jail then to see 5 innocent people get executed. This administration would just as soon kill the 5 so they can kill the other 95...mj

...a little late reading, check out this poem on Phil's page. A little sad...don't regret, just let those who matter know that they matter...spread a little love...see what comes back...mj
