Six arrested over 'Nigerian e-mail' fraud
Six people were arrested in South Africa over the weekend on suspicion of being involved in the infamous "Nigerian" e-mail and letter fraud.
Four of those detained were Nigerian, one was Cameroonian and the sixth was South African. Police in South Africa believe that the six are part of an international fraud and drug-dealing cartel, sending out thousands of e-mail and letters in an attempt to defraud. [ZDNet]
So, the helpful Nigerians got arrested, how sad...not! It's nice to see Scotland Yard at work doing something like this. I get this scam at least once to twice a year. The most recent was a few weeks ago. As you read it you get the feeling that you have just won the lottery, well, the lottery of the damned. The sad fact is that many have fallen for it.
If you get a chance and want to find out some USEFUL INFORMATION, pay a visit to the Urban Legends Reference Page. Just last week I had a chance to use it, when someone I know sent me information on the "lavish pensions Senators and Congressmen receive." Imagine our outrage at seeing this explaination for the "fact" that Congress doesn't care about Social Security. It's all false of course. My favorite is the version where they had to add an attack on Clinton (also false) just to increase the moral outrage...mj
