Ralph Nader - Patent Buster

Ralph Nader: "The United States spends more than $1 billion annually to examine patents. Despite this expenditure, the Patent Office has become a glorified diploma mill, routinely granting rights that should never have been issued. The patents wouldn't stand up in court, but they're expensive to litigate. So why are we forcing developing countries to follow our lead when we don't do a good job ourselves?" Software patents == evil.

2003 Denver Mayoral Election

Westword is running an in depth piece on the Mayoral election. There is a great deal of background about past elections, candidates, and voting demographics. The author sprinkles in a bit of hyperbole also. I like that. Says Westword, "These political insiders -- usually dubbed 'campaign consultants' -- will reveal that the harmless-looking suburban-style tract homes in southwest Denver are actually part of the city's redneck belt, where country music drifts out of pickup trucks and an occasional Confederate flag adorns a basement. You learn that whole sections of Five Points -- the historic heart of Denver's African-American community -- now speak Spanish, and that the once almost entirely white neighborhoods of southeast Denver are being changed by an influx of blacks and Asians."

Westword has a companion piece about campaign strategy. In this article they juxtapose the official line on strategy from each campaign with comments from "political insiders."

2003 Denver Municipal Election

The Denver Rocky Mountain News covered the first Denver Decides candidate forum last night. The forum was filmed by Denver's Channel 8 and will be broadcast 1:30PM Saturday and 7:30PM Wednesday. From the article, "Jeremiah Attridge, one of four District 1 contenders, blasted Denver Mayor Wellington Webb for 'giving away the candy store to influence- peddling lawyers and producing a 'budget full of fluff." Well now we're getting somewhere. A candidate stepping on the current administration's toes. I wondered when that would happen. Now let's see who wants to distance themselves from Webb and who thinks his support will help them.
