2003 Denver City Council Election - District 11 Jon Bowman is trying to point out that Michael Hancock's management skills are questionable according to this article from the Rocky Mountain News. Says Bowman, "If you're not paying attention to detail, what can the citizens of District 11 expect from you?" Hancock counters, "I think it's clearly a sign of desperation. He's doing everything he can to discredit me and this venerable agency in order to lift himself up." I don't live in District 11 but following the theme the Rocky has identified in the mayor's race I like Bowman's smile the best. Heh. 8:00:28 AM

2003 Denver Municipal Runoff Election The Rocky Mountain News has an editorial about nice guys and political races. From the article, "We frankly have no idea whether nice guys tend to make better mayors than candidates with a nasty streak - and for the record, we think Mares is a pretty nice guy himself. Nor can we say we're happy with the fact that so many voters seem to base their political opinions on such fragile perceptions." 7:28:32 AM

2003 Denver Mayoral Runoff Election More analysis of the News4/Rocky Mountain News poll released this week. Experience vs. likability are highlighted by the Rocky Mountain News. From the article, "He (Mares) needs to shine during big, televised debates . . . and Hickenlooper needs to avoid engagement whenever possible, (Eric) Sondermann said. 'Mostly, all Mares can do is hope Hickenlooper fumbles the ball in a major way." 9News has scheduled a televised debate for May 27th. That's the same day as the "Hickapalooza" fundraiser. I don't usually point out fundraising events by the candidates but I liked the name. News 4 has a debate scheduled for May 31st. I didn't see any political news on Channel 7's website. I don't know if they have anything planned. Coyote Gulch does not watch much TV, especially for news. Update: Hickapalooza is Wednesday the 21st not the 27th as I wrote above. Another quick look at last week's poll by the Rocky. The paper quotes Lori Weigel, of Public Opinion Strategies, as saying, "It is very clear that this is a pocketbook election in Denver." Don Mares and John Hickenlooper both oppose the new concealed weapons law passed by the state legislature according to the Rocky Mountain News. Mike Littwin tries to inject humour into the runoff in his column this morning. Says Littwin, "Experience. Apparently, having no experience in government is a plus. It even helps if the last time you can remember voting was while watching American Idol." 7:18:48 AM
