2003 Denver City Council Runoff Election

The Rocky [May 30, 2003, "Error mine, says aide to Pachner"] is reporting that Marcus Pachner's campaign has incorrectly listed him as a contract attorney although he didn't receive his law degree. Ellen Dumm, Pachner's campaign manager, is quoted as saying, ""Marcus has never said he was a lawyer. That was my mistake."

2003 Denver Runoff Election for Auditor

Campaign contributions from developers to Ed Thomas' campaign are the subject of this article from the Rocky Mountain News [May 30, 2003, "Thomas urged to return money"]. From the article, "City Council members, including Thomas, approved the rezoning necessary for the development - headed by The Morgan Group - in April, over the objections of the neighborhood groups."

Dennis Gallagher has reported that his home computer has been stolen and the Rocky (and Ed Thomas' campaign) [May 30, 20003, "Computer reported stolen"] is questioning the coincidence of it being stolen a day after a citizen requested all of Gallagher's e-mails from City Council. Did a Thomas supporter swipe it? Did a Gallagher supporter spirit it away?

2003 Denver Municipal Runoff Election

Here's the link to today's The Stump from the Rocky Mountain News.

Preliminary reports on campaign financing are the subject of this article from the Denver Post [May 30, 2003, "Candidates report gifts, spending for May"]. Reports are due today but Ed Thomas' campaign and Don Mares' campaign filed some early paperwork this week. Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News. The Rocky also has a table breaking down Wednesday's contributions. Candidates are required to file daily reports for contributions of $500 or more. Not surprisingly, Mares has very few of those. Articles earlier in the week highlighted that Mares had many more donors than Hickenlooper but that the amounts were much lower.

Here's a link to some letters to the editor in today's Rocky Mountain News. Rick Garcia, Don Mares, and Jeanne Robb are mentioned.

Election coverage from the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post is covered in this column The Message from today's Westword.

2003 Denver Mayoral Runoff Election

Update: Vince Mease points to a humour piece that I missed.

The Denver Post [May 30, 2003, "Upsets common in mayor races But experts believe Hickenlooper's lead is insurmountable"] has a short article about upsets in mayoral races. Mike Dino, an advisor to John Hickenlooper is quotes as saying, "That's why people vote. I've given up on predicting outcomes, and I did that after '91 when people were all saying Mayor Webb didn't have a chance."

The Denver Post [May 30, 2003, "Crime plans called vague Mayor hopefuls' strategies"] takes a look at Don Mares' and John Hickenlooper's crime plans in this story. From the article, "The plans were discussed with both local and national crime experts, but none of those consulted knew which candidate presented which idea. Most experts found many of the proposals plans broad, vague and short on crime prevention. Some said a few of the proposals were based on inaccurate premises."

After receiving low marks on crime the Post [May 30, 2003, "Funding a question in transit proposals"] asks Mares and Hickenlooper how they're going to fund their transit proposals. From the article, "But Vidal (Bill Vidal, executive director of the Denver Regional Council of Governments) said that only about 33 percent of the money the state Transportation Department gives the metro area comes from federal funds. Approximately 50 percent is funded by local governments, and one-quarter comes from RTD." Add 'em up, seems like there should be a surplus of funding at 118%.

The Rocky has a story on both candidate's spending outside of Colorado. The paper has an editorial on the new jail and takes the opportunity to defend John Hickenlooper's spending outside of the state.
