Denver Student Voices - Civics Fair

Here's an article from the Denver Student Voices website describing their Civics Fair held on May 10th. These kids deserve a good deal of praise for their involvement in the election and the effort they've expended educating their peers. They've also done a good job of aggregating news stories about the election.

2003 Denver City Council Runoff Election

There is a difference of opinion between Jeanne Robb and Caroline Schomp over gay rights as reported by the Denver Post. The rift is over who is the stronger gay rights supporter. From the article, "The dispute centers around a 1980s incarnation of the city's R-0 zoning, which allowed only married adults to share the same house."

2003 Denver Mayoral Runoff Election

The Denver Post takes a brief look at each mayoral campaign and their strategies with two weeks left until the runoff. From the article, "Mayoral candidates John Hickenlooper and Don Mares are wrestling for the title of underdog and government reformer with only two weeks to go until the June 3 runoff." Here's a story from the Rocky on the subject of campaign strategy. Says the Rocky, "Denver voters, meet Don Mares: the insider, outsider, experienced underdog of the city's mayoral race."

Here's an interview with Don Mares from the Rocky Mountain News.

The Post also has a look at what some people who are now or have been inside city government are thinking about the prospect of John Hickenlooper hitting the ground running if he wins the election. "Envisioning the future is one thing, while making it happen is another - especially with a looming $50 million budget deficit and the threat of city layoffs hovering over an inexperienced politician," says the Post. Meanwhile Don Mares' labor union ties are examined in this article from the Post.

John Hickenlooper introduced his early childhood education plan yesterday according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Included in e-mail from the Aaron Harber show:

"Aaron's straight-shooting questions to the candidates will include 'Don, how will you make up the enormous gap between you and John from the primary?' and 'John, how is your zero political experience specifically a benefit for Denver citizens?' Please note that rather than our usual 30-minute show, this is a special one-hour program. Broadcast date and times will be: Friday, May 23rd at 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Sunday, May 25th at 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This is our last Runoff Election broadcast and has not been broadcast before."

Here's a link to the Post's letters to the editor page with a couple of citizens weighing in on the mayoral runoff. Totally unrelated to the campaign is a letter from the city's favorite slumlord, Douglas Bruce.
