Peter Erskine Talks Up The Lounge Art Ensemble On The New Jazz Thing This Thursday, March 6, 2003 at 8:00 pm PT

Peter Erskine, very cool hat, picture stolen from his home page at http://PeterErskine.comPeter Erskine will be sitting in (branching out to a new instrument, the phone receiver) at 8:00 pm PT, Thursday, March 6, 2003 on The New Jazz Thing, live on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM. He'll be in town this Saturday, March 8, 2003 playing the Athenaeum Jazz At The Studio with his Lounge Art Ensemble (Peter-drums, Bob Sheppard-sax, Darek Oles-bass), which will be the focal point of our chat. Here's how our Athenaeum friends frame it,

"...an exploration of the rhythmically propulsive tradition of the saxophone-bass-drums trio. The trio pays homage to classic 'lounge era' favorites, but with original twists and arrangements that cause the unfamiliar to veer in and out of the familiar. "Pennies from Heaven" is retooled as the somewhat Latin and swinging "Pesos," the old standard "Perdido" is reinterpreted a la Monk as "Pretty Toes," and "I Hear a Rhapsody" is thoroughly transformed into "I Hear a Rap CD." While filled with a sense of fun and funk, the band is always anchored in the superlative playing of each musician."

A picture named lavajazz.jpgFor an aural taste (and I hope I can get more than just a taste sent down to us for the show) of the sound, there are some RealAudio samples from the LAE disc "Lava Jazz" (with Dave Carpenter doing the bass work) and I hunted down an additional Flash-based sample (along with other Erskine samples). Maybe Peter can zip up a couple of complete tunes, send by email (or stick out on his server), and we'll burn a CD for the show...gotta love the Inet (update...we don't have "Lava Jazz" at the station so it will need to happen this way or not). Other Pete discs may have to do.

Reviews of the Lounge Art Ensemble have been graciously supplied by Mr. Erskine himself (BTW, nice site Peter, but the Mining Co. link on the above page is no longer of this world as is the Mining Co.) and others,

"Their timing and melding on unison passages is matched by their soloing, sometimes on a variety of instruments (Shep goes back and forth between soprano and tenor saxophones, for example). Together they deliver some of the finest jazz being played today--innovative, fresh-sounding and catchy."

Some questions about LAE and the coming gig that come to mind...

  • How much of the LAE is the particular music they play (What is the 'lounge era' anyway?) and how much is exploration of the seldom heard sax-bass-drum (aka 'piano-less') trio?
  • Since he's involved in so many different kinds of ensembles (you name it, Peter's done it), why does he do this particular one? What does he get out of it?
  • Does he have any insight into how listeners should approach a show like this that doesn't have the standard harmonic feel of a band that might have a piano or guitar in it?

He's also going to be in San Diego later in March (27th) at Victor's by the Bay with Sadao Watanabe, so we'll want to ask about that date too.

A picture named pete.gifWe'll also want to talk about some of the other things he's been up to lately and what he's got on his plate for the future. Also, what projects or people would be like to be doing and working with if he had all the time in the world...you know...those things that are just have been percolating for a while but just haven't seen the right time to do. And since we do listen to a lot of New on the show, I wonder what New stuff he's been listening to. And we'll want to get his take on how the Internet has and will (crystal ball style) affect him and other musicians in the future.

Lots of ground to cover and I hope to get it all on tape (or some other not so old school media) and post it up in here for all those not within our listening range. Tune in, turn on.

Interesting article on MS plans to hook you low cost and keep you when you need something bigger.

Netcraft runs a nifty little utility to tell what web server (and operating system , etc.) any website is running on. Here's what TheNewJazzThing.com is running.

Can't We All Just Get Along?

Time for jaw-jaw with North Korea.

    [Google Top Stories]

"...any effort to deter North Korea after a "surgical strike" on Yongbyon coming in the midst of a Middle East crisis, will rely overwhelmingly on American strike forces. The Pentagon, in fact, may be forced to recommend the threat of nuclear retaliation for any North Korean attack on the south, or on Japan, following elimination of the most threatening part of North Korea's nuclear potential. This, of course, would further alienate America's South Korean ally and shatter any coalition assembled for action against Pyongyang, thereby reinforcing the bilateral nature of the crisis."

The gist of this article is that direct U.S. - N. Korea talks are needed, although that's not the current policy of our president.

SOAP author says enough specs already [InfoWorld: Top News]

"Specs are like bodily orifices: Everybody has them and they all have certain unique characteristics. But just writing a spec means nothing. If you write a spec that no one implements, did it ever really specify anything?"
