2003.03.20 - The New Jazz Thing! Live on Jazz 88, KSDS San Diego, 88.3 FM - Peter Erskine

8 minutes till the show, and...

Peter Erskine is going to be back on the show tonight at 6:40 pm PT!! It will be great to talk to him again...here's the interview we did 3 weeks ago. Peter's in town for 2 shows (just added 2nd show at 10:00 pm...i'm going I think!) at Victor's By The Bay. I just found out, so it will be seat of the pants.

Other than that, just lots of New music!! And fun!!!

[Much later...]So, after the show I went to see The Peter Erskine Trio (Peter-Drums, Dave Carpenter-Bass, Alan Pasqua-Piano) and Sadao Watanabe at Victor's By The Bay. The events that ensued totally met the exhaultation overheard when the band kicked in, "We're f**ckin' lucky to be here!" We were. And it wasn't just the music.

After arrival (the 8:00 show was just getting out), I hooked up with Jazz 88's drummer and DJ extraodinaire, Barry Farrar, who introduced the players for the first show/set at 8:00 and was itchin' to leave when we arrived. But the thrill of the hunt for drummer Erksoman kept him around and in line for the schmooze that followed. I got a shot of him with Peter and he got his Percusive Profiles promo recorded. I got up the courage and asked Peter if I could get a picture with him and Sadao. What an honor to photograph a couple of legends. And I knew I had to get in myself and had spied the perfect mirror to accomplish it when Barry and I found the musicians lounge earlier. So, after a bit of confusion with Peter and Sadao about what the heck this dude was doing making them turn to look at themselves in the mirror, they got the gist of it (and I even heard a little "excellent" as mirrored enlightenment dawned on these full-on jazzers). I made them mug for a couple more pictures...they sure handled it well...and then it was rush to the stage.

The set was awesome. Sadao was exquisite. His sound was smooth and unique. His lyricial approach was so sweet. Effortlessly flying. Peter was right when he said he was in the line of Bird. While he might not have had the speed, he had the sound.

And Victor's By The Bay was a pretty nice sounding room. And they serve Stone Pale Ale on tap...now that's a good reason to come back itself. And they've got good taste in music. Dave Holland is there in May...how's that!

So, here is a photoalbum that captures both TNJT Live show (the log, playlist, and pictoral segues) and the Peter / Sadao show, second set (click the Peter / Sadao link and View Slideshow to see the pictures from the concert first...you may get bored with the artifacts from the radio show).

Anyway, there is lots of stuff from the audio recording from tonight's show to keep some things coming for a week or so. And I didn't even come close to posting the playlist tonight...at least there are pictures, even of The Playlist.

Will We Be Fighting Street To Street in A City of 5 Million People?

The Economist.  The fight for Baghdad.  [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

A sobering look at how this could play out in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. Even if you are not that interested in war stories, this one should be read, just to steel yourself against what could come. John's weblog has lots of good insight (or predictions) on the war...he should know...he was a military pilot.
