Surround Sound Through Headphones Because of individual differences in anatomy, H.R.T.F. measurements are not uniform. Therefore one problem with previous attempts to create a virtual headphone experience was that the effect worked well only for those people who had identical head measurements.
To improve the surround effect, the company measured a sound's reverberations as it bounced around in an actual movie theater in Sydney and included that data in the signal processor.
Fairly high level technical talk for a family newspaper. There are much better ways to do this but none that don't involved changing the way audio has been produced for years. Hopefully this is a decent compromise.

MS takes a bow in court. Such philanthropists.... [The Register]And Microsoft's response? Try not to lose your lunch. The company will "investigate" to determine if it needs to disclose more information to the court.
I'd like to see any other defendant try that one. I'd like to see someone standing in the dock and telling the judge that he or she will "investigate" whether or not it's necessary to mind the court's understanding of the law.
You'd have to have the prosecution in your pocket to pull that one off, now wouldn't you?

Prayerfully and Powerfully, New York City Before and After: "One way to make sense of these snapshots is to see them as a kind of buffer zone between the New York that existed before Sept. 11: a strange place to fear, loathe, strive for and be raucous in, and the New York of today: a strange place to mourn, worship, respect and be silent in.

Oh hurray! My posting to the Radio Discussion group about a bug in the OS X version has finally been acknowledged. Thank you Andy Fragen!
When something didn't work as expected I started poking around with the scripts and did a bunch of troubleshooting. Hopefully my leg work will help get us a solution sooner. It's so cool that Radio is open like this.
I wonder if using file.open in an if statement might do the trick.

Radio UserLand : Discussion Search?: "You can also use Google.
Be sure to add "site:radio.userland.com" as a parameter, without quotes. " Embarassed I didn't know that tip. Great.

Time To Call Microsoft's Bluff. Microsoft has threatened that if it is forced to remove Internet Explorer from Windows
2000 and Windows XP, it will have to take those operating systems off the market
and will be unable to produce any new versions. [osOpinion]
After devestating court demonstrations, does anyone believe this anymore? The only problem with getting rid of Internet Explorer is the lack of a free alternative that works as well (good thing I don't have comments turned on, or all the Mozilla folks would flame me. Sadly, I don't consider Mozilla a viable alternative). Microsoft has been so successful in quashing competition... [OS X Journey] MS has proven again and again that they are not to be trusted.

All the Globes a stage: The Bard is served. International Herald Tribune Mar 6 2002 8:48PM ET [Moreover - Arts and culture news]A fine article on a fine cultural attraction. I did not expect much when Cait and I visited the Globe this past summer. I was thoroughly impressed. And we didn't even get into the theatre. The exibition is well worth seeing.

This post inspired by the Euphemism Generator I ran into this evening.
My favourite euphemism for male masturbation is one that I thought rather odd at first. I've actually only heard it once . . . on a Bowser & Blue live CD I mastered many moons ago. They go through a long list and finally end up with ". . . and that great Canadian term: 'pull the goalie'."
.< 1:42:25 AM >
The Always Amusing Euphemism Generator: "The Euphemism Generator can create up to 75,145,760 unique phrases!
" A weird and wonderful web. I check my news aggregator and see a comment on a post I made. I read the comment and then follow a link back to the person who sent made the comment. The latest posting on his site is about the Euphemism Generator. I follow his link back to Metafilter which is apparently where he heard about it. And I start reading comments people have left about the generator. Then I remember a uniquely Canadian euphemism for male masturbation and think to myself "I'll post that". Later it occurs to me that I never did make it to the Euphemism Generator!
Does anyone remember when you used to get frustrated on the web when you couldn't find an interesting site?

Canon EOS-D60 for US$2,200 ?. In Canada at least... Canon has appeared to raise the stakes in the big Nikon vs. Canon poker game. I can hardly wait to buy a digital Canon that will handle the lense I bought for my Rebel. But it needs to drop to a third of this. Yeah, I know I'm pushing it!

Salon.com Technology | Stop. Pay toll. Download. "Everybody was looking forward to getting away from proprietary [compression formulas], then the licensing terms came out," says Frank Cassanova, director of product marketing for Apple's QuickTime. "It knocked the wind out of our sails."
It's pushing developers to look at open source alternatives. What a mess. The fee should be paid by those who want an encoder. Charging for the players (decoders) is where the problem arises.

Many believe that every document on the web -- even every paragraph or sentence -- should be, at least potentially, the root of a threaded discussion. I have thought so too, for a long time. But now I'm wondering whether this "bug" in Radio is really a feature. Writing for Radio feels different than writing for discussion groups. It feels more like writing for publication. It makes you want to think through what you say more carefully, and not shoot from the hip.
I've been a writer all my life, and one of the lessons I've learned is that the process of writing -- done slowly and reflectively -- is closely related to the process of learning. I don't really know something until I can explain it, and I can't really explain it until I can write it.
In this age of instant communication and message overload, it gets harder and harder to find time to think things through. Maybe every document on the web shouldn't also be a conversation. Maybe we also need some quiet places in which to think and write. [Jon Udell: Radio]Yes, we definitely need more quiet time. And time for reflection. I agree that writing things down helps us to organize our thoughts. It's something I know but that I forget about. Good to have a reminder.
