Record companies: Save us from ourselves!. With payola up but profits down, labels are wondering if paying $100 million to middlemen "fixers" is still a swell business idea. [Salon.com] 'Most listeners don't know it, but virtually every song they hear on FM commercial radio has been paid for -- indirectly -- by five major record labels. The companies pay millions of dollars each year to the independent radio promoters, universally referred to as "indies," who in turn pass along money to radio stations whenever they add new songs to their playlists.'

But the art of the next bomblet won't be in the bombing, it will be in the smooth ramp, the seduction that gets people to try it without being overwhelmed by its hugeness. It will appear to be an evolution on instant messaging. But in fact it will be much more. [Scripting News]Dave the perpetual tease. I've never used an IM app but I'll bet this one (being much more than that) will capture my imagination. lCan't wait.

Dave Hanks reports excellent results with the new Mozilla web browser:
"After almost a full day (several hours) of use I can say this new
Mozilla version a vast improvement over Netscape 6.2.1!!! Not one
crash yet! This baby is rock solid and it actually works. I've even
visited several sites that would always crash Netscape and it keeps
on ticking.
I've reset my default browser to the new Mozilla... Looks like I'll
use IE far less (almost never now) and I sure wont miss the last
Netscape download. Thank you open sourcers, you have done very well."

Melonsoft's $10 WebPeek X uploads screenshots taken at user-specified time intervals to a designated server via FTP. The images can then be viewed remotely in any web browser. Date, time and IP address can be added to the image, and image size and quality can be adjusted by the user. [Macintouch]I'm behind a firewall at work. John Cramp's Playthrough FX 1.0 is a free Mac OS X utility to applying real-time effects to audio input. [Macintouch]From the description it looks like a bit of a fun toy at this point, as opposed to a serious tool. My interest is that it shows the potential of OS X as an audio platform.

CD Review Search / Recherche dans les critiques de DC: "The Casals documentary was aired in 1974, shortly after the untimely death of the cellist. Gould chose Albert Kahn, who co-authored the volume of Casals memoirs Joys and Sorrows, as the main commentator. While his authority as a Casals specialist is never in doubt, Kahn does not have a particularly good radio voice, which makes his hesitant, rather stilted delivery a liability." Two comments. What's an untimely death? The man lived for 97 years.
Kahn's voice? Oh my goodness. If you don't get what's happening with the rythm of Kahn's voice and how Gould places the music around it (and vice versa), you've completely missed the point. He certainly has an indiocincratic delivery. But 'hesitant' and 'stilted'? Not in this context. You can practically hear Gould's delight in having such a character to play with.
