Spying: The American Way of Life?
If that happens, new surveillance powers that police receive today likely will become permanent.
That's why some members of the "In Defense of Freedom" alliance that sprang up after Sept. 11 -- and includes libertarian, conservative, and liberal groups -- are alarmed.

NATIONAL POST ONLINE | Bandleader changes tune on O Canada
Senate studies changes: 'Traditionalist' Banks now favours altering lyrics to anthem: "
He said the first known English version of the anthem, printed in 1908, reveals the word "us" on the exactly same syllable and musical note that the word "sons" appears in the current version.
The 65-year-old musician said it is believed the lyric was changed in 1913 because of the Boer War when young men were being sent off to battle. But he added: "Even then, it was not true that we only sent young men off to battles."" Actually, he supports the idea of reverting to the original text. Interesting bit of history of which very few of us were aware.

Hatch: No Lid on Online Music. In a speech to music retailers, senator and aspiring songwriter Orrin Hatch says he doesn't support requiring major labels to license content online. Joanna Glasner reports from San Francisco. [Wired News] "Sen. Orrin Hatch, Utah Republican and songwriter, told music retailers Monday that the federal government will be the driving force in deciding the future of online music distribution."
Does this scare anyone? Washington is going to determine how music is sold. Reminder: music is sold in other countries.

The America-hating left turns up the volume. Six months after al-Qaida killed more than 3,000 civilians, they'd rather bash Bush and Ashcroft than our terrorist enemies. [Salon.com] I've asked in another column how Salon can praise Bush's handling of the war and still think he's stupid, and still haven't received an answer.I wanted to point to this article in the interests of seeing what the other side had to say. I can' read the whole article because I'm not a member of Salon. But this quote above may be enough for me. I won't pass judgment on Bush's war here, but is it not conceivable to the author that someone can be stupid (and how can he doubt that this guy is a dolt?) and still have handlers and advisors who keep him on track on certain issues?
And the pull-quote is purely a way to fire people up. It's a ridiculous statement. As simplistic as Bush's 'you're either with us, or against us.;

Hybrid cars: They're here, but nobody's buying. Everyone from stars to greens to President Bush seems to be hyping gas-and-electric cars. So why do we keep buying SUVs? [Salon.com]I was standing beside a particularly large SUV yesterday. I was in the middle of the largest city in Canada. This thing was immaculate and had a leather interior (ie, it's not used for roughing it). I was thinking to myself, 'how can a person convince themselves that they need one of these things? How can they rationalize the damage they are doing?

Anne McIlroy: Deciding the future of healthcare in Canada. Guardian Unlimited Mar 11 2002 7:42AM ET [Moreover - moreover...] So the debate over public or private medicine is out of date. What is needed is an intelligent debate over what basic services need to be protected, so that all Canadians have equal access to a health care system that meets their fundamental needs. It is a difficult task, and it is not clear if the federal commission now travelling the country will be able to deliver.

The Globe and Mail: SeriesThe genius of Web sites for accommodating multiple points of view is nowhere better illustrated than in the recent on-line craze for public diaries, or "blogs." It will go off line 7 days after publication. Ironic, given that the article is about weblogs, and weblogs drive traffic to sites like this.

Thousands of AOL servers are already 100% Linux, and more are switching over every day. AOL number-crunchers figure they can replace an $80,000 box running proprietary UNIX with two $5,000 Linux boxes and get a 50% increase in performance in addition to the cost savings. "Don't tell our competitors," one of our AOL contacts says. "Let them keep buying expensive crap."
