The Seattle Times: Editorials & Opinion: Lumbering toward solutions to U.S.-Canada softwood spat: "Our import of softwood lumber from Canada represents the largest single traded product with our largest trading partner. The environmental implications of this trade are staggering. About 90 percent of all lumber imported from Canada is cut from primary or "old growth" forests. Our housing market is fueling the liquidation of Canada's ancient forests, some of the last large tracts of such forest in the world and the last bastions of habitat for vulnerable species like grizzly bears, bull trout and mountain caribou. "
The environmentalist POV.

Hazards of the DMCA - Tech News - CNET.com 'There's no doubt that this is free speech. Yes, it's in Norway, but the Internet is pretty seamless about national boundaries. The site is written in English. It's got good data and a point of view. People who want to know more about Scientology and who look to Google won't find it. That's wrong.'

A Cerulean Byte: "I talked to Apple today about its new Bluetooth support (more accurately, shortly upcoming support), and they made it clear that part of their interest in making this technology available is to turn the Mac once more into a technology-done-right showcase. As with 802.11b, FireWire, and USB, Apple was not only the first or one of the firsts, but they were and remain the premier platform on which the technology is used without fuss through hardware abstraction and OS integration." Stuff we Mac folk take for granted.

Massive no-fly zone ordered over Kananaskis, Alta., for June G8 summit: "Canadian military officials say the restricted airspace -- which runs from southeastern B.C. to the Calgary city limits -- will be patrolled by CF-18s prepared to shoot down unauthorized aircraft.
" Calgary International Airport is within the no-fly zone. But they're not closing it down. I don't think I'd want to be flying into or out of Calgary during the summit. Coincidently I was due to fly out of Calgary on 11 Sept.

MediaGuardian.co.uk | New media | Poetry Society evicted from its website '"We've spent five years building up our award winning website and it's pretty devastating to have the name taken over like this," said Christina Patterson, director of the Poetry Society.
"We were getting 300,000 hits a month. It seems remarkable that a company promoting gambling and viagra should use the name of a charity set up to promote poetry." '
Ouch. I've been reading a few stories lately about organizations losing their domain names.
