The Register: Canada mulls blank CDR, MP3 player tax: "But hang on a mo - approx. 100m blank CDs are sold a year, of which 44million a year are used in home-ripping, according to the Canadian Private Copying Collective's own figures, the Globe And Mail notes. So why should the levy be applied on all CDs, the majority of which is used in IT? No, we can't work that one out, either.

And what about the pirates who store stolen movies on CD. Shouldn't the movie industry get a slice of the pie? "

What a mess. The article includes info about a petition against the move and other contact info.

It is my honor to present: Radio Community Server 1.0 [Scripting News]
Holy crap. It's free! What a crazy guy that Dave is. I wish I had a bit more time to digest what's going on here. Userland is moving so fast lately that it's hard to keep even three steps behind them. Very impressive.

Gramophone - Universal SACD/DVD-A player now on sale 'Many audio enthusiasts remain confused as to whether they should buy a Super Audio CD player, a DVD-A-capable DVD player or just stick to CD, but Pioneer thinks it has a solution in the form of its DV-747A player, which has just gone on sale.'
Yup. If you can afford it you can have it all. Of course if DVD had fulfilled it's initial promise we wouldn't be in this mess and we'd all have inexpensive players which would play any DVD. Sigh.

Computerworld: Don't Deny Privacy for Security's Sake. Dan Gillmor. Encryption is one technology that promotes security and privacy. Yes, it enables bad people to communicate. But if we want a safe economy in the Digital Age, strong cryptography - with its positive and negative uses - isn't an option. It's a requirement. [Tomalak's Realm]

[15:10 ET]  John Ormsby reports an Apple response to a rebate trap noted earlier by readers:
"Last week Apple sent out a notice to its dealers that they have modified the expiration of the Suite Deal rebate. Customers who qualify for the rebate during the plan now have 30 days from shipment of their machine to send in the required rebate form and data. Therefore the deadline for returning the rebate application is tied to the actual shipment of their machine and not some fixed date."
[Macintouch]
Ah. That's better.

RIAA Takes Piracy to the Hill

Washington, DC--At a Senate committee hearing on protecting creative works in the digital age, Hilary B. Rosen, president and CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), submitted testimony reinforcing the threats of digital piracy to the marketplace. [ProSound News]

Three of five Tory leadership candidates have smoked pot -- one yet to exhale. CNEWS Mar 18 2002 1:59AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]

Good news. I still won't vote for any of them. (This is in reference to provincial politics in Ontario.)

Canadians want fewer immigrants, poll says. Toronto Star Online Mar 18 2002 6:03AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]
Ugh. Let's hope this is a post 11 Sept reaction. The poll was done before the release of the census that made it clear we have to encourage immigration. My family were immigrants once, even if they came (via the US) from England in the early 1600's.

Thestar.com/Nixon loathed Trudeau and Ottawa: "Five hundred hours of audio tapes secretly recorded by the disgraced former president and made public by the U.S. National Archives make it clear that Nixon's sulphurous loathing for Trudeau extended to the former prime minister's staff, and even to Canada."
Too funny. Nixon would have been in completely over his head with Trudeau.

All comers welcome in Canada. Guardian Unlimited Mar 18 2002 7:56AM ET [Moreover - moreover...]
Our population as a whole would be declining if not for immigrants. So we need more. But most of them go to the main urban centres where population is growing. The entire country gets just under a quarter million a year and half of them come to Toronto.

Thestar.com/Setting his life to music took time: "From a world of music, Christos Hatzis chose Canada.

From Canada, the Greek-born composer has reaped a world of acclaim.

"I found much more breathing room here," said Hatzis, 49, an associate professor of music at the University of Toronto.

"For an artist, I found Canada had a more nurturing attitude for young talent."

Congratulations to Chirstos on his New Pioneer Award.

Jim McElligott is wrestling with the same rebate Catch-22 pointed out earlier by Donald O'Shea:
"I'm in the same situation: I ordered a new iMac CD-RW and MS Office during MacWorld, and the iMac is no where to be seen. I called the phone number listed on the rebate form, apparently just for rebate info, and the person was quite sympathetic (although this situation had apparently not occurred to him yet). He suggested that I send in the completed rebate form, copy of invoice showing iMac on backorder and the MS Office box top by the deadline (Apr. 30), They will then send me a letter saying that my rebate request was incomplete, please supply the iMac UPC code. This will extend the deadline to fulfill the requirement, hopefully long enough to receive the iMac. Worth a try..."

E-Scribe New Media: Mailfilter Stuff: "Mailfilter, by Andreas Bauer, is one of the simplest of these tools, but is remarkably effective when set up right. It's essentially a command-line POP client whose only job is to kill spam"
The amount of spam I receive is minimal. But this tool may be of some use.
