A Mac Box Worth Weight in Gold '    David Hastings[apple] Enlarge image    This Mac box was sold on eBay.2:00 a.m. March 21, 2002 PST A lot of seemingly worthless items are auctioned on eBay every day. But perhaps taking the phenomenon to new heights, an empty cardboard box has just been auctioned for more than $500.'

Afghanistan: U.S., Canadian Troops Reflect On Fighting In Operation Anaconda: "Close to 500 Canadian troops from the Princess Patricia light infantry battalion took part in Anaconda. One soldier, Corporal Landon Perry, described his feelings as he was shuttled by helicopter into the combat zone. "It was a little unnerving," he said. "But once you hit the ground and see the number of troops out there and the massive air support, your confidence builds pretty quickly, and you feel fairly secure in what you're doing.""

Guardian Unlimited | World dispatch | Bush and Blair stand alone 'The recent US military operation, codenamed Anaconda, against al-Qaida and Taliban holdouts in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, involved a small number of troops from countries such as Norway and Germany. But theirs was a token presence, with the bulk of the fighting being done by Afghan and US forces.'

That's funny. Here in Canada we've been reading about how our soldiers were involved.

Batteries Promise Not to Fade Before the Light Does. A new long-lasting battery may give photographers many more snaps per pack in a year when some industry analysts are predicting a 29 percent increase in digital camera sales. By J.d. Biersdorfer. [New York Times: Technology]
Very nice, but this is the wrong solution. Buy rechargables! Good ones.

EMI to Revamp and Cut Its Work Force 20%. The EMI Group announced a sweeping restructuring of its operations that will eliminate 1,800 jobs and streamline its two major music labels, Capitol and Virgin. By Suzanne Kapner with Laura M. Holson. [New York Times: Technology]

Downsizing Videotape, Yet Again: " But despite all this, it bothers Sony that most people still think of camcorders as special-occasion machines. Few people toss a camcorder into their pockets or purses as they would, say, a still camera. If a camcorder were as handy as a still camera, Sony reasons, surely more people would grab it and go (and would surely, therefore, buy more blank Sony tapes and accessories). That's the thinking behind Sony's new MicroMV tapes and the DCR-IP5 camcorder that accepts them. "
Good grief. Already? Most folks I know haven't even heard of MiniDV yet. Pogue takes the poop out of the introductory model but holds out hope for the future of the format. I don't know. I'm thinking that the next step is to do away with tape altogether. Now that would be a compelling reason to move beyond MiniDV. And that's a few years away yet.

In Microsoft Case, RealNetworks Says Competition Is Unfair. A RealNetworks executive accused Microsoft of withholding information that would have allowed RealNetworks' software to work as well with Windows as rival software made by Microsoft does. By Amy Harmon. [New York Times: Technology]

Add a Ben Franklin to iMac Price 'Jobs said the Bluetooth module again demonstrates Apple's ability to lead the pack. Just as Apple was the first company to build in FireWire, Ethernet, USB and Wi-Fi wireless networking into all its products, it will also be the first with Bluetooth.

"We think we're on the cutting edge of Bluetooth by actually making it work," he said.'

Just What Was He Smoking? (washingtonpost.com): " Now that the latest tapes from the Nixon White House have been released, the press is all over them with characteristic glee, eager as always to remind us that not long ago the leader of the free world was buggier than a flophouse blanket. Don't you get tired of this?

Me neither."

There's some hilarious stuff in here. See also another article on Nixon's take on Trudeau. It's just a shame that we won't have tapes from George W.

The Globe and Mail: Search: "Alexina Louie and Gary Kulesha, both from Ontario, and Quebecker Denys Bouliane will write three pieces each for the NAC in Ottawa over the next four years, including one work apiece for full orchestra, one chamber piece, and one for an 18-member New Music Ensemble to be drawn from the ranks of the NAC Orchestra. The composers will also be active in a mentoring program for young protegés, and a proposed two-week summer school. "
A good solution which should put an end to the criticism. Congrats all around.

Seeing Bush's Brains Despite Mangled Words: "Although he likes Mr. Bush and admires his impressive response to the Sept. 11 attacks, especially his ability to reflect the country's anger at the terrorists and determination to bring them to justice, Mr. Bruni describes Mr. Bush, in current parlance, as intellectually challenged. However attentive any of us were to Mr. Bush's limitations as a speaker and thinker, Mr. Bruni's recounting of Mr. Bush's verbal flubs will leave readers amused, astonished and maybe even a little depressed that someone so inarticulate could have become the nation's chief executive."
There are some hilariously dim-witted quotes, even in the review. But the book seems to suggest that we not judge him just by his inarticulate utterings.
