News -- Guy tries to kidnap girl off street in Holt, or does he?: http://www.lsj.com/news/local/020802_assault_1b-2b.html

Comment -- This happened in my hometown at an intersection I know well. Maybe I'm thinking too much like a lawyer, but read the story closely: do the facts match the headline about "alleged attempt to abduct girl"?

The guy asked the 16-year-old twice if she wanted a ride. Then, the third time, he grabbed her arm and asked her again if she wanted a ride. She broke free, ran, got his license number and called the cops. Good for her!

But what was going on? He apparently did not try to drag her into the van, but maybe only because she was able to get free. He apparently did not say "get in the van." He just kept asking her if she wanted a ride. Pretty creepy behavior, regardless.

If it was an attempted kidnapping, what kind of moron would try it at a busy intersection at 9:30 in the morning with plenty of witnesses around? On the other hand, according to a book I read about serial killers, they often use vans (it's where they kill their victims) and they sometimes snatch women off the street in broad daylight. Not to say this guy is a serial killer. But it will be interesting to follow this case and see what he ends up being charged with. My guess is they knock it down to assault. Nevertheless, it sure shows that if you're a woman, you can't be too careful.

News -- TiVo, Replay getting better and better: http://makeashorterlink.com/?M2FB13B61

Comment: Digital video recorders are so cool that it's impossible to watch TV without them. I can't stand to watch commercials anymore. And there's nothing better than having a lineup of shows ready to watch whenever I feel like watching. It's really true that there is plenty of good stuff on TV, but without TiVo or Reply to find it and record it for you, it's impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff.

News -- Braun comes up with a new design to replace the Oral B Indicator, the world's best selling toothbrush: http://makeashorterlink.com/?R27C54B61

Comment -- Interesting article about the art of industrial design. Who would have thought it would be so complex to design something as simple as a toothbrush? It boggles the mind to imagine what car designers must go through.
