News: Trying to keep giant jumping carp out of the Great Lakes:
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/08/26/national/26CARP.html
Comment: Apparently, fisherman on the Mississippi have to carry garbage can
lids to use as shields to fend off these cavorting carp. No one knows what
would happen to the Great Lakes eco system if they started to spread.
However, some Asian-American people find these carp appetizing. Maybe we
could eat the carp after they've wiped out the walleyes and whitefish?
News: The Labor Department projects that software engineering will be the
fastest-growing occupation between 2000 and 2010, with other
computer-related industries trailing close behind --

Comment: This article says that in response to the slow economy, there has
been a short-term decline in the number of people studying IT. But long term
demand still looks bright.
Harris N. Miller, president of the Information Technology Association of
America, said the last time there was a dearth of computing professionals,
salaries skyrocketed and workers benefited from the labor shortage. "There
was a tremendous imbalance in the late '90s; potentially you have the same
sort of thing going on right now. People are saying, 'I don't need this kind
of IT training right now,' " Miller said. "Our concern as an industry is
that if they begin to again see major declines in enrollment, down the road
four years, as the economy picks up, once again companies are going to find
themselves in a shortage situation."
