News -- Wall Street Journal Monday: "According to IRS data from 2000, the
top 5% of tax filers paid more than 50% of total income tax revenue, and the
top half of tax filers were responsible for almost all revenue -- 96% of the
total take."
Comment - So, the bottom 50% of tax filers pay almost no federal income tax.
How do you further cut taxes for people who are not paying any federal
taxes?
Of course, low income people get socked hard by social security taxes, which
are a flat rate no matter how little (or much) income you have. It's
important for these folks to take advantage of Earned Income Credit whenever
possible, so they get some of that tax back.
I think President Bush is proposing to put more money into the economy,
instead of sending it to Washington. That means that
the so-called "rich" (the top half of tax filers) will get the benefit of
tax cuts, because they are the ones paying the taxes in the first place.
News -- Explore Mars with this Web-based Mars simulator:

Comment - "This interactive simulator gives you the feeling you're on a base
on Mars. The layout consists of a lab, galley, bunks, sick bay, and a
wardroom. In each 3D room, mousing over the different areas displays
additional information about the room and its equipment. When a red outline
appears, click on the item for a close-up."
News - Conference in San Jose looks at how to prevent people from recovering
data from computer memory:

Comment - I think the conclusion of the paper is that experts can suck data
off of a hard drive, PDA, etc., even if you believe you've thoroughly erased
it. What was particularly interesting was the author's advice that if you
have something you really, really don't want other people to ever find (like
nuclear weapons secrets, your private diary, etc.) then don't save it on
your computer.
