News -- Computer security expert reveals easy technique that lets a person
create a copy of the master key for an entire building by starting with any
key from that building:
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/23/business/23LOCK.html
Comment - The article says that some professional locksmiths have known
about this technique for a long time. Now, almost anyone can do it! Will
buildings beef up their security? Not likely, as the article points out,
because it's a hassle to change all the locks in a building. The article
makes some good points about the constant tension between security and
convenience.
News -- A liberal columnist in the New York Times makes a great case for
regime change in Iraq:
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/22/opinion/22FRIE.html
Comment - Friedman won last year's Pulitzer Prize for newspaper commentary.
He's an influential reporter on Middle East issues. In this article, he
takes a long-term view: "It is not unreasonable to believe that if the U.S.
removed Saddam and helped Iraqis build not an overnight democracy but a more
accountable, progressive and democratizing regime, it would have a positive,
transforming effect on the entire Arab world - a region desperately in need
of a progressive model that works."
News -- For the first time, more than 50% of U.S. households own stocks:
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/business/business-economy-fed-stocks.html
Comment - The article points out that most people own stocks (like Jennifer
and I) through mutual funds and 401k plans. "Despite the stock market's
tough times in recent years, the value of stock holdings managed to increase
from 1998 to 2001."
