I offer four photographs as a part of my continuing efforts to demonstrate that Kansas, is in fact, a very pretty place. There are also pictures of two of my favorite professors.

As a result of all the rain Wednesday evening (the same monsoon that almost did me in), the Walnut River is flooding. This poor tree in the Pecan Grove is normally on dry ground 200 feet from the river bank.

Me and Dr. Wimmer. I absolutely adore Doc - he's had a profound influence on my life.

On the left is Max Thompson, one of my professors. On the right is Brian, Max's partner. Max is a reknown ornithologist - he's the one who infected me with birding fever.

October 11th is definitely an auspicious day. In addition to it being the Slat Rat's Birthday, it is also Eleanor Roosevelt's birthday. Plus, it is the 100th anniversary of Crayola Crayons.

It's my 45th birthday today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My birthday today is a little bittersweet - one year ago today, my Dad, exhibiting his lifelong talent for great timing, experienced a major brain hemorrhage ten days after surgery for a brain clot. He thudded into a deep coma and died four days later. As odd as this sounds, there is something deeply important about the tie between my birthday and his death. I really can't describe it - other than, in my mind, my birthday has become a celebration of my life, his life, and the ties between us. For me, this date now has a much deeper meaning.
