Yesterday was Dennis's "Celebration of Life" service at Otter Lake - a lovely lake way out in the woods at the North end of Fort Richardson. It was a gorgeous crystal clear cold day - the lake was glass smooth and the water perfectly reflected the snow dusted mountains.
And why is my description so detailed? Well, when I arrived at the lodge, I walked in and there was a large wonderful picture of Dennis. That was when the reality of his death hit - and hit hard. I had to turn right around and walk back out the door. I wandered down to the lake shore, sat on a bench and cried for twenty minutes. In between sobs, I took in the spectacular view.
It was a long, difficult, and painful afternoon. However, the service truly was a celebration of Dennis. It was touching, funny, and often delightfully revelatory. As memories were recounted, I felt closer and closer to Dennis. I was reminded of his funny little mannerisms, his gentle nature, his intelligence, and his eclectic approach to life.
For me, the world seems a sadder place without him...
