This post was intended for yesterday. However, I was just one totally whipped pup last night. I was in bed at 8:00 PM - well on my way to being comatose.
Anyhoo, we Alaskans take both the Summer and Winter Solstices pretty seriously. In the summer, we party like there's no tomorrow - outdoor fairs and music festivals, golf, softball, hiking, etc. all lasting well in Midnight - when it's still light
The Winter Solstice is very different. After all it's the shortest day of the year. Yesterday we had a whopping 5 hours and 27 minutes of daylight. The sun rose at 10:15 AM and set at 3:44 PM. Whee!
But I really like the Winter Solstice - the snow on the ground and the Christmas lights just make it all warm and cozy.
So early yesterday evening (long past sunset), I indulged in one of my favorite Solstice traditions - listening to Paul Winter's Annual Winter Solstice Celebration at the New York Cathedral of St. John the Divine. I had to work late last night, so I plugged in the concert's web cast and very happily listened to the wonderful sound of Paul Winter's soprano sax in that marvelous cathedral.
